This pilgrimage to the seat of Japanese civilization is perfect for those wanting a more in depth experience of Japan, it's an ancient culture and great natural beauty. Many places we visit are off the beaten track with time for walks through ancient pilgrimage trails or soaking in beautiful hot springs. This is a truly Japanese adventure to the heart of Japan.

 
ON THE TRAIL OF THE GODS ~ 13 DAYS

Day 1 ~ Tuesday SYDNEY / OSAKA / KYOTO
 
Interstate passengers take connecting flights to Sydney. JAL day flight to Narita. Transfer to Haneda Airport and JAL domestic flight to Kansai Aiport. Check in to New Miyako Hotel.
Day 2 ~ Wednesday KYOTO
 
Kyoto. Late morning visit to Fushimi Inari Shrine, a beautiful shrine to the Fox God. Visit Kiyozumi temple, a Kannon/Tara temple, famous for it's giant wooden stage and views of the city. Wander through the back streets and cobbled lanes that lead to the downtown area where we have a welcome dinner.
Day 3 ~ Thursday KYOTO
 
Kyoto. Visit Eikando and Nanzen-ji, the famous Zen temple on the eastern mountainside. The rest of the day free to explore this ancient city.
Day 4 ~ Friday KYOTO
 
Free day in Kyoto. We can advise lots of great places to visit.
Day 5 ~ Saturday KYOTO
 
Train to Byodooin, the 10th century Paradise Hall. This national treasure is a life size mandala and Amida Buddha Hall. Optional to continue onto Nara or back to Kyoto for free afternoon.
Day 6 ~ Sunday KYOTO / ISE
 
Depart Kyoto by train to Ise. Afternoon visit to the mother of all Shrines, the Grand Shrine of Ise, home of the Sun Goddess Amaterasu. This shrine was established in the 4th century and houses the Imperial regalia. Accommodation at the delighful Inn, Hoshidekan. Dinner and breakfast at the Inn.
Day 7 ~ Monday ISE / NACHI
 
Afternoon departure by train for Kii Katsuura, about 200km along the beautiful coastline of Wakayama Prefecture. Accommodation at the temple inn at Nachi.
Breakfast and dinner.
Day 8 ~ Tuesday NACHI
 
Free day to explore the sacred Nachi Falls, (Japan's largest) and Seigantoji, the first temple in the 33 Kannon pilgrimage. There are beautiful walks in the area, you can soak in hot springs in caves by the sea or visit the Taiji Whale Museum. This area is the home of tuna, whale and dolphin fishery in Japan. Breakfast and dinner.
Day 9 ~ Wednesday NACHI / KAWAYU
 
Bus to Kawayu, a quiet village in the mountains where the hot springs bubble up through the river. Accommodation in traditional inn. Bus to near by Hosshinmon-oji and a three hour walk through what is considered the climax and the most beautiful part of the ancient pilgrim's trail (Kumano Kodo). The walk finishes at Kumano Hongu Taisha, the grand shrine where all pilgrimage routes meet.
Many Japanese believe that this is an especially strong power point, the spiritual heart of Japan. Return to dinner and to soak up the healing waters at the charming Kawayu. Breakfast and dinner.
Day 10 ~ Thrusday KAWAYU / Mt KOYA
 
Late morning departure to Koyasan via the Ryujin Hot springs and spectacular Skyline drive. Koyasan is the 8 petaled Lotus mountain peak established in the 8th century by the great saint Kobo Daishi. It is the seat of Shingon (Esoteric) Buddhism. We will spend 2 nights here in the temple accommodation. Breakfast and dinner.
Day 11 ~ Friday Mt KOYA
 
Koyasan. Free day to explore this sacred and tranquil temple mountain. The ancient graveyard Okunoin and Abbots quarters still stone garden are highlights. Breakfast and dinner at traditional temple accommodation.
Day 12 ~ Saturday Mt KOYA / OSAKA / SYDNEY
 
Breakfast. Afternoon departure for Kansai Airport and home destinations.
Day 13 ~ Sunday SYDNEY
 
Arrival in Sydney. Interstate passengers continue by Domestic flights.
